OTHELLO EPISODE 1: A NEW HOPE

For this assignment, you and a partner will be asked to think about and compose an
off-stage scene for Othello to better fill out our understanding of this world. The purpose of this
assignment is to demonstrate your awareness of the characters’ personalities and relationships, as
well as your awareness of Shakespeare’s themes and social messaging. Here are the requirements
to include.
Guidelines for the scripts:
● The scene must take place before the events of the play.
● The scene must make sense in the context of the play.
● The scene must include a soliloquy.
● The scene must include at least 3 of the following characters: Othello, Iago, Desdemona,
Emelia, Cassio, Roderigo, Brabantio (NOTE: you can use other characters from the play
or create new characters as well)
● Your scripts should be around 2-3 pages in length (Times New Roman, size 12, 1.5
spacing)
● The script should be written as an actual script, the way lines are presented in your book.
● The script should be written in Shakespearean English, and employ language,
metaphors, syntax, and pentameter speech where appropriate.
● In addition to dialogue, provide relevant stage directions as well.
● The language and actions in the script should all be school-appropriate.
In addition to your script, I’d like you to compose a one to two-page explanation of your choices
for the scene (double-spaced). Use this opportunity to explain your understanding of each
character’s motivation and personality, and demonstrate your awareness of how the characters
would interact with each other. You should also explain why your script makes sense in the
context of Shakespeare’s play. Use evidence from the text to support your decisions. This part
of the assignment is IMPORTANT to your grade, so be sure to show a clear comprehension of
the text through your explanation.
Partners:
You are submitting only one script and a write-up (each partner does NOT have to complete their
own). Each partner is expected to contribute fairly to both parts of the assignment
